Mordants
Mordants are naturally occurring metal salts use to fix dyes, alter pH, and shift colors. These include alum (aluminum potassium sulfate), iron powder (ferrous sulfate) and Soda Ash (sodium carbonate)
Oak Apples
Oak apples are hatched wasp eggs, harvesting oak apples hurts neither the oak or the wasps! They are full of tannins which is an important reagent to help dyes and mordants bind to natural fibers.
Pomegranate
We use pomegranate skins as a pre-colorant and pigment.
Tara
Tara is a small, thorny, pod-producing tree that grows in Peru. It's used as a pre-colorant.
Madder
Madder is a bushy, thorny plant. The roots are harvested and dried to produce one of the most consistent red and orange hues of any natural dye reagent.
Logwood
Logwood is a tree that grows throughout Mexico, Central America, Madagascar, India, and other countries around the world. It's wood is used for rich purples.
Weld
Weld, or Dyer's Rocket, was originally cultivated in Europe and is a biennial plant that yields beautiful hues of yellow.
Black Walnut
Black walnut hulls are crushed and used for deep, rich browns.
